An interesting
diversion from the customary timing of the New Year's day can be
observed among a section of Hindus, from the state of Gujurat and
the western parts of India, who celebrate this festival during the
late autumn. They celebrate the beginning of another year in Diwali
or Deepawali. The people worship Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of
the Hindu God Vishnu who is considered to be the Goddess of wealth.
On this day, they pray for prosperity in the ensuing year.
In
Nepal (a declared hindu country), the new year starts on the 14th
of April this year, as they enter Bikram Sambat 2057. They celebrate
the holiday as Nava Varsa.
